How to Get an Abortion: What to Expect When You Go to an Abortion Clinic

Wade, here are some questions you should be asking yourself and your family about your health care decisions:When will I need an abortion?
Many doctors tell women they can have one after age 25, when they can no longer be pregnant.
But others say it is better to wait until the first trimester of pregnancy, when many women have low blood pressure and have not yet had an abortion.
In some cases, doctors will also prescribe an abortion if you are at risk of miscarriage.
Do I need to have an ultrasound?
Many medical groups support women who do not want an ultrasound and don’t want to be told they are pregnant.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends an ultrasound in cases of high risk of serious bleeding, and the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynsics (ACOG) says women who want to get an abortion should receive an ultrasound.
But some health care providers and advocacy groups have questioned the importance of the ultrasound.
Do I need a referral?
Many women are worried about having to go to a clinic and wait for an appointment.
But most states require that women have a referral from a health care provider to get a medical abortion.
If you do not have a health insurance plan, or are unable to pay for an abortion, you should talk with your health plan about your options.
Can I go to the clinic if I have high blood pressure?
The American College oncology (ACON) recommends a blood pressure cuff or other device to be worn at the time of an abortion procedure.
If it is not safe for you to go in person, you can go to an abortion clinic and have an abortion there.
But in the past few years, some women have been forced to travel to an in-person abortion clinic to get one because of a high blood-pressure test.
The blood pressure of women with elevated blood pressures can increase dramatically when they are taking anti-hypertensive drugs.
Some of these women are not ready to have the procedure.
Do ultrasounds change my decision?
Yes.
A doctor may use a visual exam to determine whether you are pregnant, but the procedure may not change your decision.
Your health care team should make sure you understand your options and have a plan to get your abortion if your health is at risk.
Do women get ultrasounds at the clinic?
Some clinics may offer ultrasounds in the privacy of their offices.
But if you want to know the location of your abortion clinic, call the nearest abortion clinic.
Some providers have suggested you bring a friend with you, or bring your own camera.
Can I go back to my car?
If you are driving, you may not be able to get out of the vehicle.
Some clinics require a police escort when you drive through their doors.
If your car breaks down, you will need to bring it to a hospital and have it repaired, or you may need to pay to have it replaced.
Is it safe to go into a hospital emergency room?
There are no laws banning abortion facilities from opening or closing during an emergency.
The only exception is in cases when a life is in danger or an infant is in imminent danger.
You may want to go home, if possible, and wait out the crisis.
Do you know what to do if you have an emergency?
Some women have experienced abortion-related complications after going to a doctor for an inpatient procedure, and many others have had abortions in hospitals.
In all cases, you need to know your rights and your options if you need an emergency procedure.
What can I expect if I get an emergency abortion?
Some providers will take your blood pressure.
Others may use an ultrasound to help you understand what is happening.
