‘The Baby Diaries’: Inside the U.S. Census Bureau’s ‘Baby Diaries’

A new report by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service offers an illuminating look at how the Census Bureau works and what the agency does with data from the most recent survey.
“The census and its data collection are at the center of our nation’s health and prosperity,” the report’s co-author, Demetrios Papadopoulos, said in a statement.
“This work is vital to the country and its citizens.”
The report looks at how Census Bureau officials use the Census to compile the population, to estimate the population change in the country, to determine who has a higher-than-average chance of dying during their lifetime, and to determine what types of people are most likely to experience life-threatening conditions.
This chart, based on a report from the Census on the “Baby Diets,” shows how the census uses its data to calculate the population.
The data are gathered from a sample of all U.s. citizens, including people who have lived in the United States for at least one year.
These data are used to determine how many live in low-income households, how many of them have health problems and whether they are older than the average person, according to the report.
The report also shows how census data is used to help policymakers determine who is eligible to receive Social Security benefits and who is ineligible.
The analysis comes as the Census prepares to release the next set of population estimates for 2018.
“Census Bureau data provide important insights into the life expectancy of Americans and the health status of the nation,” Papadopolous said in the statement.
